About The Conference Topics
The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) is a new tool to help you plan for the financial well-being of your relative with a disability. Already thousands of families and individuals across the country are setting up the plan, and an estimated 500,000 Canadians will benefit from this plan over time.
This RDSP planning workshop will be your guide to understanding and taking advantage of the plan, so that you can help yourself or your relative with a disability capitalize on the numerous advantages of the RDSP, including the significant federal contributions.
Before the RDSP, families and individuals had relatively few options. The RRSP - Registered Retirement Saving Plan helps us save for retirement. The RESP - Registered Education Savings plan enables us to save for our children’s education. But when planning for a loved one with a disability, our only option has been to establish a trust. Establishing a trust requires a visit to a lawyer, accountant or notary; sometimes entails a substantial cost, and is done without any government support. Now families and individuals will have a choice that will be inexpensive to establish AND provides a government contribution.
Contributions to the plan grow on a tax-deferred basis. Additionally the Federal Government has established matching grants and contributions to assist people with low income.
With a clear message from government that “people with disabilities should live meaningful, full lives like any other citizens”, the Ontario Government has exempted the RDSP and income from an RDSP in determining eligibility for income support under ODSP. This means the beneficiary will be able to save and use incomeform their RDSP whenever they want, for whatever they want. You may read more about the RDSP on the HRSDC website.
Many parents and other supporters of children with a disability are concerned about the best way to provide for the future without jeopardizing supports such as ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program Income Supports) that the individual may be receiving. A fundamental aspect of estate planning is to have an appropriately structured will that is valid and takes into consideration tax laws, probate fees, and other considerations. If you die without a will or if your will is not found to be valid, your assets will be distributed according to a government formula that is unlikely to align with your intentions. Trusts (including specialized trusts such as absolute discretionary trusts or "Henson Trust") may be a solution that works for many individuals and families, but there are alternatives or additions to trust fund strategies that may be worthy of consideration, such as ownership of a principal residence.
Registration Options
You may register for the full day (includes a quality lunch buffet with salads and sandwiches) for just $20. Alternatively you may register for the afternoon session only at no charge.
