2021 East Coast Trail "Trail Raiser Community Hike"

27 years in the making ... the creation of a world-class hiking trail on the eastern edge of the Avalon Peninsula. This year we are back in person on October 23! Join us and celebrate the East Coast Trail, a trail network that we all love and show appreciation for this resource in our province, especially as we recover from the pandemic and the impacts of Hurricane Larry.

In 2020, our Community Hike was cancelled due to the impacts and restrictions of COVID-19, in its place we hosted the On The Go fundraiser in Fall 2020 and Summer 2021. We are so thankful for the support we received throughout these fundraisers. 

This Fall, we are excited to be able to bring back the in-person Community Hike. In compliance with all public health COVID-19 guidelines, we want to gather to celebrate the East Coast Trail. We saw so many new hikers discover the ECT over the last 18+ months and the trail was well-loved. This Trail Raiser Community Hike will be focused on raising enough money to cover the costs of the damage from Hurricane Larry. 

Hurricane Larry made landfall in Newfoundland as a Category 1 Hurricane with winds primarily from the southwest. After the storm, our trail crews hiked all the paths to conduct tree counts and assess the damage to the Trail.  We are happy to report that the Trail is open and passable, however, there are a significant number of trees blocking or leaning over many of the paths; Approximately 2,500 trees down or leaning across the ECT. The south-facing portion of our coastline was the hardest hit along all paths, and especially the paths between Petty Harbour and Cappahayden.  Learn more about the impacts of Hurricane Larry on the East Coast Trail here

Come Hike and Fundraise With Us

Rally up a team of friends, family, coworkers, or just your own two feet. This is our first in-person event since the beginning of the pandemic and our goal is to raise $50,000 to help recover from Hurricane Larry and maintain, enhance, and protect the East Coast Trail. 

  • Saturday, October 23, 2021
  • Morning Registration: Quidi Vidi Legion 
  • After-Hiking Party at Quidi Vidi Brewery featuring local entertainment, a hearty lunch, a chance to share your hiking experience with others, and superb prizes at historic Quidi Vidi Brewery. 

To participate in all event day activities on October 23, you need:

  • Valid NL VaxPass
  • $50 minimum donation paid or fundraised in advance
  • A non-medical mask; which will be worn during registration, on the bus, and upon entry to Quidi Vidi Brewery. Masks are not required to be worn during the hike.

If you do not have a valid NL VaxPass, you will be required to transport yourself to the trailhead and will not be allowed inside Quidi Vidi Brewery for the post-hike party, but can enjoy your lunch on Quidi Vidi Wharf. If you have not raised/donated a minimum of $50, you can participate in the hike but will not be able to join us for the post-hike party at the Brewery. 

  • Due to COVID-19, cash and cheques will not be accepted on the event day, this will help us to fast track the check-in process
  • Pledges that are received before 4 pm on October 21 are eligible for prizes, those received after this deadline are not eligible for prizes.

  Hiking Challenge

  • Six great hikes to choose from:
    • Hike 1Harbour Walk: Family Hike including activities for kids along the way, Legion to Quidi Vidi Brewery via The Gut portion of Sugarloaf Path, 2 km, easy rating, 2 hours
    • Hike 2Quidi Vidi Lake Walk: Family Hike option 2, Legion to Quidi Vidi Brewery via Quidi Vidi Lake, 5 km, easy rating, 2 hours
    • Hike 3: Signal Hill Paths: The Legion to Signal Hill to Quidi Vidi Brewery via Burma Road, North Head Trail and Ladies Lookout, 6.5 km, difficult rating, 3 hours
    • Hike 4Sugarloaf Path: Logy Bay to Quidi Vidi Brewery, 9.0km, rated difficult, 3.5 hours
    • Hike 5Cobblers and Sugarloaf Paths: Outer Cove to Quidi Vidi Brewery, 17 km, rated difficult, 5.5 hours
    • Hike 6"Trail Run": Cape Spear to Fort Amherst via Cape Spear Path and Deadmans Bay Path; 20 km; recommended for experienced trail runners who can complete the distance in 3.5 hours or less

Fundraising Challenge

  • $50,000 Fundraising Goal:  This money will help us recover from the Impacts of Hurricane Larry
  • Minimum $50 donation - which you can pay yourself or fundraise! This is required for adults (16+) to participate in the post-hike party at Quidi Vidi Brewery. We are also asking all adult participants to accept the challenge and raise $100, this is in addition to the $50 mandatory minimum donation. Help us meet this challenge, and if realized, we will meet/exceed our fundraising goal of $50,000 for this event.
  • For every $50 raised you'll get 1 ticket entered for the draw prizes on hike day
  • Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 team and individual fundraisers, all registered hikers are eligible for the draw prize(s).
  • Prizes to be announced
  • All participants who pay for or raise funds to hike are considered individual fundraisers. An individual fundraiser can win an individual prize and be a member of a winning team. Plus, all hike participants, regardless of the source of your registration fee, are eligible for the draw prizes.   • The more you raise, the more draw prizes you are eligible for!

Hiker Waiver  All hikers are required to sign a waiver form electronically as they complete the online registration process. If you are bringing a child/children (under 18) they have to be identified and covered by the waiver

All check-ins will take place at the Pleasantville Legion at 66 The Blvd #930, St. John's on the morning of Saturday, October 23

*Exact timing subject to change based on registration numbers. Hikers will be notified of exact check-in times and procedures the week of the event. 

Parking

All hikers should park at the Pleasantville Legion or parking lots around Quidi Vidi Lake. Designated parking areas to be released closer to hike day.

A Shuttle Bus will be ready to bring you to the designated trailhead for Hikes 4, 5, and 6, and all participants can catch a shuttle bus back to your car after your hike from Quidi Vidi Village, or after the post-hike party. Shuttles will run from 12:30 pm onwards as required.

Mid-Day Event at Quidi Vidi Brewery

Wrap up your hike with a lunch and a fun-filled program at Quidi Vidi Brewery from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Lunch and music start around 12:30 pm, and between 1-1:30 pm we will stop down to thank our sponsors and fundraisers and to announce the winners of the fundraising prizes

What to Know Prior to Registering Online   

  • All adult participants must have a $50 donation to participate in the event
    • You can make a donation during the registration process or you can raise the money by fundraising (pledges, donations).
  • Register as an individual or start/join a team (maximum of 10 people on a team)
  • During the online registration process, you will be asked to select the hike you want to do on October 23, or you can choose to fundraise only if you cannot join us in person on October 23
  • All ages are welcome! There will be activities for kids on the family hike.
  • The NL VaxPass will be verified upon check-in at the Legion and is required to ride the bus and join the post-hike party at Quidi Vidi Brewery.
  • The event will be subject to the public health guidelines in place by the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador. If guidance restricts gatherings of this type, or other adjustments must be made, participants will be notified by the Association. 

Getting Started as a Fundraiser

  • Once you've registered you will be asked to set up a personal fundraising page. Here you can send fundraising emails, receive credit card donations, manage pledges, and view your fundraising status. 
  • You can also collect cash & cheque pledges. Collect the full name, mailing address and email address of any cash or cheque donors to make sure they receive a tax receipt.
  • Deliver all cash and cheque pledges to the East Coast Trail Association.  All money turned in to the ECTA office (50 Pippy Place, Suite 9, St. John's) by 4:00 pm on Thursday, October 21 will be eligible for fundraising prizes.  All credit card donations made online up until midnight on Friday, October 22 will be eligible for prizes. Cash and cheque p ledges and donations will not be accepted onsite on hike day but will be accepted the week following the event.
  • Donations and pledges $20 and over are eligible for a tax receipt.  Remember to collect the full name, address and email address so donors can receive a tax receipt. The name on the credit card is the name that will be on the tax receipt.
