My personal message:

As most of you know, I've been involved with the Youth Project for over 10 years now! I got involved as a confused, newly out 15 year old and at that time, the Youth Project was life changing (and honestly, probably life saving) for me.

The Youth Project has given me confidence, support, experiences for growth and development, countless opportunities (including a trip to Toronto to present at the Canadian Women's Foundation's annual conference), and most importantly, a second family.

I've been involved in many ways over the last 10 years, beginning as a youth and Youth Board member. From there, I began volunteering as an event facilitator and Board of Directors member. As of October 2014, after the loss of the YP's co-founder and my personal mentor, Leighann, I became Vice Chairperson of the Board.

I'm incredibly passionate about the work done at the Youth Project by staff members, volunteers, Board members, and of course the amazing youth who walk through our big pink door.

We are raising much needed funds for the Youth Project's school programs and services! Proceeds go towards anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia work in classrooms and schools, resources, supporting Gay Straight Alliances, and more!

Please help me reach my fundraising goals. Just click "Sponsor Me" to make a donation.

Why should you support Strike out Homophobia?

  •  75% of LGBTQ students and 95% of transgender students feel unsafe at school.

  •  6 out of 10LGBTQ students report being verbally harassed about their sexual orientation.

  •  1 in 4LGB students are physically harassed about their sexual orientation

-EGALE's Canadian School Climate Survey.

Homophobia and transphobia are real problems in schools across Nova Scotia. The Youth Project works hard to combat these issues - in addition to support services, community outreach, and safe social spaces for LGBTQ youth, the Youth Project provides many school programs and services:

  • Each year we host over 500 anti-homophobia workshops in classrooms across Nova Scotia, for grades 4-12.

  • We provide professional development opportunities for teachers, youth workers, social workers, and healthcare professionals, and more!

  • We offer resources, guides and materials for making classrooms and learning environment welcoming for LGBTQ students and teachers.

  • Maintain an Ally Card Program that connects students with safe and supportive teachers and admin.

  • We continuously support the work of Gay/Straight Alliances

The Youth Project is a highly-accessed resource among teachers, health nurses, youth workers, and students. To keep these important services going we need your help.
