Starts: Apr 27, 2013

Our message:

All pledges raised by the Rotary Trump AIDS Poker Walk support local and international community service projects by participating Rotary and Rotaract Clubs, as well as selected NGOs participating as special guests. Rotary clubs operate on a 100% volunteer basis.

Proceeds apportioned to the war on AIDS, like all Rotary initiatives, are carefully allocated directly to health providers, educators or non-profit agencies and hospitals with a proven track record of effectiveness and responsible financial management. Projects are monitored. All have all been carefully vetted, and in many cases visited by Canadian  Rotarians or their Rotary partners. Accountability is paramount.

Guest Teams are fielded by Registered Canadian Charities selected for their efficient, strategic and compassionate humanitarian work in HIV/AIDS, who will be directing the disbursement of their share of net proceeds in accordance with their own policies and government regulations, independently of Rotary District 7070.

75% of funds raised will be returned to the teams for their chosen AIDS charities. The balance, after expenses, will support the diagnostic, prevention, and treatment programs of the HIV/AIDS clinic of the Ongutoi Health Centre in Uganda

Note* that Rotarian Richard Mewhinney is currently preparing to visit the Ongutoi Health Centre. You can follow his adventures and the status of the project on Richard's Blog.

20 years of war in North Uganda, have displaced two million people, forcing most to live in refugee-style camps where disease is double the national rate.

The village of Ongutoi (approximately 30,000 people) is located in one of only two sub-districts in the entire country of Uganda to have been 100% displaced during the war. The national incidence of HIV/AIDS infection in the country of Uganda is presently estimated at under 8%. However, the incidence of HIV/AIDS in Ongutoi and the surrounding region is estimated at 17%.

The Rotary Clubs of Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, and Belleville have partnered with High Adventure (Canada) in a water and sanitation project under a Global Grant at the Ongutoi Health Centre.

In addition, with Rotary support, an HIV/AIDS and health education clinic has been built at Ongutoi. Patients at the clinic are presently tested for Typhoid, Malaria and HIV infection by way of blood tests.

Funds received from the Trump AIDS Poker Walk will help provide the infrastructure for an enhanced diagnostic, prevention, and treatment programs for those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS in Ongutoi and the surrounding district.

Funds permitting, this will include the:

  • purchase of a CD-4 machine (to determine the current state of infection and help determine the most effective use of ARVs)
  • training of a lab technician in the use of the CD-4 machine
  • the purchase of a motorcycle for an HIV/AIDS counsellor to travel to reach patients in the more remote areas of the surrounding district
  • development and radio broadcast of health education information on the importance of prevention, testing, and proper treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Your support will reduce HIV/AIDS in Ongutoi, Uganda, through education, prevention, and treatment. Thank you!

Help save a childs life

Your Participation, Support and Donations will

  • Help save childrens' lives by blocking transmission from mother to child at birth - for the price of a coffee in Canada.
  • Help save their future by supporting aging grandmothers, desperate relatives, orphanages and schools struggling to raise millions of orphans with insufficient food, water, shelter, clothing.
  • Help take orphaned girls, many still pre-teens, out of the bordellos, off the street corners, and away from HIV/AIDS by providing an alternative means of survival for them and the young siblings they're trying to raise.
  • Educate: Help community workers and survivors spread the word in their villages about what HIV/AIDS really is, how it's transmitted, how to protect against it, what to do to stay alive.
  • Treat the sick: Provide ARV treatments, beginning with children, mothers, teachers, caregivers, community leaders - and basic pallative care for the dying when ARVs are unaffordable or unavailable.
  • ... and much more.
Help educate children's lives
