I have been a Registered Nurse (RN) for many years and currently work in the Operating Room at RVH. In April, I will be volunteering with a Broken Earth surgical team from Barrie to aid people in Guatemala that don’t have access to the type of surgical treatments that we have here. Our surgical team of 22 includes surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, many of whom have volunteered with Broken Earth in the past. This will be my third trip with Team Broken Earth.
Haiti has been the primary focus of Broken Earth’s efforts since the devastating earthquake in 2010. Recently they expanded their support to other countries including Guatemala. Broken Earth first went to Guatemala in 2016 to assess medical needs to better inform future missions. Teams from Calgary and Vancouver have conducted missions there in the last year and are returning there in the coming months, along with Team Barrie.
Unlike Haiti, where Broken Earth has accumulated a stable inventory of supplies and drugs, we are going to have to secure and bring an enormous amount of supplies. This will be a major part of our preparation for this trip and will require much needed financial donations. We are working hard with Teams Calgary and Vancouver to coordinate our efforts to obtain supplies, equipment and medications.
Each individual team member is required to fundraise a minimum of $2500. This will be to get our team and equipment to Guatemala.
As you can imagine, a surgical mission to Guatemala is a huge undertaking, requiring vast resources and funds. I hope that I can count on your support in some way. Broken Earth is a registered charity and all financial donations are tax deductible. Thanks in advance for your help in reaching my goals!
