I will be participating in a medical relief and education mission with members of Team Broken Earth Vancouver in April 2020.
This is my second year participating in Team Broken Earth in Guatemala City. We provide surgeries to those with little or no access to care.
Last year we performed 73 surgeries in less than one week. There were so many moments that stick with me; like the woman who took a bus for three hours and walked for three hours to get to us, and then competed that same journey to return home 1 day after major abdominal surgery. Children were able to use their limbs again, or eat food. Tumours were removed. Childhood fractures repaired in adulthood. But even in moments before their anesthetic, when most of us feel fear, they said thank you. Every patient was so grateful for our help and it saddens me to think of all of those who simply cannot afford access to surgical care in Guatemala. This is why I have to return, to make a difference. I am so excited to see more of those beautiful souls who remind me of how lucky we are and how grateful I am to be an Anesthesiologist.
So I ask you to please sponsor me and help raise money to cover the cost of supplies and travel for the team. Even a small amount helps get another bandage, or some pain medication. Thanks, Su-Yin
