In 2022 I was fortunate enough to join the Team Broken Earth trip to Guatemala and be part of a group of volunteers bringing surgeries to those in need. Over 5 days we were able to perform over 70 surgeries in 4 OR rooms. It was an eye-opening experience that allowed me to work with dedicated healthcare professionals where everyone went the extra mile.
For the first time, I was able to participate in follow-up care with patients and see how their recovery was progressing. Due to the nature of my job in medical imaging we never know how patients do after our brief interactions with them. Our patients shared their personal stories of having to endure years or decades of pain that they felt would be with them for life. From cleft palates, to malformed broken bones to tumor removals, the gratitude we were showed left me speechless. To see how happy and quickly the children recovered from cleft palate procedures was something I’ll never forget.
I’ve been fortunate to be invited back to help in orthopedic surgeries. On Oct 13 2023 we will be flying to Antigua, a small city about 50 min outside Guatemala City. This year, the focus will be on orthopedics, gynecological and general surgeries. For my part, I am trying to raise $2500 to help purchase medical supplies, air fare and accommodations for the week. I’m reaching out to ask if you would be willing to donate to help me reach this goal for a worthwhile cause.
