I am participating in Bowl for Kids Sake, to raise much needed funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-West Durham. Research shows that children who have been mentored have higher self esteem and are more likely to stay in school —empowering them to succeed, give back and realize their true potential.

For over forty-five years Big Brothers Big Sisters has played a significant role in the lives of young people in the communities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. Last year alone we assisted over 1,000 children and their families through our many service programs and activities. Big Brothers Big Sisters offers a wide range of mentoring opportunities to meet the varied needs of volunteers, children and families.
Serving as role models, our mentors teach by example the importance of giving and giving back, of staying in school, and for having respect for family, peers and community. Each time we introduce a child to a mentor we start something.
We believe every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. By doing so, they will not only do well, they will also do good things with their future. We believe that by changing the course of young lives we can in turn be changing our community. This leads to a reduction in poverty, unemployment, to safer schools and neighbourhoods. With renewed optimism for growth this leads to change on a broader, more far-reaching scale.
