Ongutoi Medical Centre is located in the bush of North Eastern Uganda approximately 560 Km north of Kampala. This village area is located in one of only two subdistricts of Uganda that were 100% diplaced during the LRA's insurrection (Lords Resistance Army). This area was a refugee camp only 8 short years ago and is now recovering. Rotary Club of Newmarket, Scarborough, Richmond Hill and Bellville recently joined together in a Global Grant application resulting in significant progress at the Ongutoi Medical Centre.
The funds raised from the Toronto Trump AIDS Walk in 2013 will be used in application for a new Global Grant application with the objective of providing enhanced diagnostic, treatment, education and consultaion programs at the Ongutoi Medical Centre and surrounding area. The picture is representative of the need, with an incidence of HIV/AIDS infection of between 17 and 20 percent. The patient being transported was a woman in labour who was about to give birth to twins. One of her complications was she ws HIV positive and at present, the Medical Centre does not have access to ARVs required for this kind of treatment.
The grant this year will provide the purchase of a CD4 machine, and access to ARV's so hopfully some patients will be able to receive treatment closer to their home villages as opposed to having to take a long and challenging ride to a referral hospital that is already operating at greatly over capacity!
