The Pyper Prize

Andrew Pyper (1968–2025) was one of Canada’s most compelling storytellers, renowned for mastering the thriller genre by fusing psychological suspense with haunting speculative elements. His global reputation was firmly established when he received the prestigious International Thriller Writers Award in 2014 for his novel, The Demonologist.

Over the course of his career, Andrew published thirteen novels, one short story collection, and three audio books, many of which were adapted or optioned for film and television. His body of work stands as a powerful legacy, continuing to inspire readers and champion excellence in Canadian storytelling.

The Pyper Prize is named in his memory. It was established in 2026 by Heidi Pyper, Pasha Malla, Mark Medley, Craig Davidson, and others who were friends of Andrew’s and admirers of his writing and generosity towards other authors. It will recognize annually a Canadian writer who is an accomplished storyteller in the horror, thriller, or speculative fiction genres.

Writers’ Trust is proud to be a supportive partner of the prize, offering space at our annual Writers’ Trust Awards to present it. Supporters who contribute $1,000 or more will be invited to attend the ceremony and will receive a limited-edition copy of Andrew's collection of short stories, Kiss Me, that is being printed to inaugurate the prize.
