Support Laura, MSW, RSW & NSD Holly
NSD's Canine
Assisted Intervention Dogs (CAI) are matched with professionals
from a variety of disciplines to work as partners in therapy.
At the end of September 2013 NSD Holly came to work with me and live
with my family. As a social worker for the London District Catholic
School Board. I spend my days working with students who have
experienced or are experiencing trauma/loss, social/emotional
difficulties and/or who are struggling with mental health issues. That
is now how Holly spends her days too! She is an immeasurable comfort
to countless numbers of students.
This school year Holly eased the transition back to school for two
students who experienced the death of an immediate family member. One
primary age student, met and bonded with Holly in the presence of his
mother when he returned to school for the first time following the
death. He then presented Holly to his class, remembering everything
that he had been told about Holly. He explained to his class that
Holly helps people who are sad and that Holly was there that day to
help him because he was very sad that his sibling had died. It was an
emotional moment and judging by the nods in the room the entire class
completely understood the importance of Holly’s role.
“She loves everyone no matter what, and sometimes the best thing when
you are having a bad day is to be around someone who loves you
unconditionally, and that is how Holly is.” ~ Student, St. Mary’s
Catholic High School
