Abby received her National Service Dog, Halo, in April, 2017.
Abby is a happy and energetic little girl with many interests. She
attends music therapy, swimming lessons, dance class and gymnastics.
Abby loves music, books, and swinging, running and jumping on her
trampoline in the backyard. Abby is a very loved, respected and
valued member of her extended families. She is adored by her parents
and is a kind big sister to her baby brother. Abby is constantly
learning new things and surprises us every day.
Abby was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at 21 months old.
She has many challenges: gross and fine motor delays, sensory
issues, speech and language challenges and behavioural concerns.
Abby also has a movement disorder which is another neurological
condition that affects her ability to walk properly. She experiences
this condition for weeks at a time and then it goes away for a while
and she can walk properly again. It usually happens every 1 ½ to 2
months and usually lasts between 5- 20 days. Falling is a safety
concern, especially on the stairs.
Abby takes off running in stores, parking lots, driveways, parks,
airports, etc. She doesn't like to hold hands much especially when
we are in public places. She pulls to get away from us, screams,
cries, sits on the floor, runs around stores touching random items,
and doesn’t listen when we tell her to stop or to stay with us. This
is a major safety concern. Having a service dog will help her remain
safe while we are teaching her how to walk with our family. It will
enable her to remain safe while out in the community.
Abby is extremely anxious when meeting new people/children, trying
new activities, being separated from Mommy (even for a few minutes),
during transitions, etc. When Abby is stressed she not only cries
and screams but scratches, pinches and bites herself. With
assistance from NSD Halo, Abby could better learn how to calm
herself when stressed to give her time to remember to be confident
in her abilities.
It is our hope that Halo will help her take part in social learning
opportunities and lead a more independent life.
We are grateful for any donations we receive toward this newly
