The May 2019 73 kilometer crossing will be the longest distance I have ever attempted on an outrigger canoe (OC 1). Two years ago I successfully paddled my OC1 61 kilometers across the Strait from Nanaimo to Vancouver, in 8 hours and 19 minutes. The final 12 kilometers of the crossing were incredibly difficult and there were moments when I doubted if I would make the full distance.
Having made the 61 kilometers, I have decided to increase the distance on this crossing for Take A Hike Foundation. I have always believed that we grow by challenging ourselves; by setting goals outside our personal comfort zones. The 73 kilometer crossing is a challenge and adventure that I hope will inspire you to donate to Take A Hike Foundation. I am training December through May on the ocean and land in rain, snow, cold winds and hopefully some sunshine. Knowing that I am helping others is a huge motivational factor that pushes me on in what I hope to be a successful crossing.
Take a Hike minimizes barriers to help students achieve success.
Take a Hike is a full-time alternate high school program that uses the outdoors and adventure to engage vulnerable youth in school, community and mental health supports. They provide full-time clinical counselors in each classroom to help students overcome barriers, so they can achieve social and academic success, leading to high school graduation.
