Friends of the Number Nine Schoolhouse, Inc.,
is a non-profit organization established to preserve,
and conserve sustainably for community use, the former Fayston Number
Nine Schoolhouse at 831 Mill Brook Road, Fayston, Vermont.
Mission: The Number Nine Schoolhouse will be a place
where community members can:
Learn, Honor, Celebrate, and Thrive.
Brief History: The Schoolhouse was built by the Town
of Fayston to serve the students in School District #9 in 1903. It was
occupied as a school until 1963, at which time it was sold to Patricia
and Robert Burley and became the offices of Burley Partnership,
architects. A significant half of the building’s dual legacy is the
creative contributions to the design of many fine buildings and
landscapes throughout Vermont and the country that were generated from
within. Now retired, Patricia and Robert Burley desire to have the
building provide value to the community, and to insure its long-term sustainability.
Future: The two-room schoolhouse will provide for
sustainable uses with the lower floor of the building providing office
space for non-profit organizations, and the upper classroom serving as
a space for community-based activities. These could include
small-scale events, public meetings, instructional courses, music
lessons, art classes and other special programs consistent with the
mission. The historical context of the building is appropriate for
exhibitions, displays and public events that honor our past and those
among us who have made or make a difference in our daily lives. With
its unique setting along the Mill Brook in the Mad River Valley, and
at the gateway to the Green Mountains, the building offers a place for
appropriately-sized celebrations and a wide range of wellness
activities. It is envisioned that a mix of many of these ideas will be
organized and managed for the long-term sustainability of the
building, through careful consideration of community desires, and
responsible land use goals.
Friends: Daughter Jill Burley, Kevin Russell, and Ken
Andrews have teamed up to form Friends of the Number Nine Schoolhouse,
Inc., a Vermont non-profit corporation, and established a strategic
partnership with the Preservation
Trust of Vermont (PTV). PTV will act as our fiscal sponsor while
we apply for 501c3 status, and partial financial support of a
wide-range of services.
Your Support: We have begun a kick-off campaign to
meet our start-up goal of $25,000 to fund a building assessment to
determine the scope of work needed for restoration; legal services for
the non-profit filing, property transfer and land use
planning;appraisal to establish a valuation of the building and land;
marketing and public outreach campaign for funding the major
restoration effort; and initial building improvements to prepare for
tenants. A major capital campaign will follow these steps along with a
robust public outreach effort to include open house events throughout
the spring and summer of 2022.
