Hello!
I am 22 years old. I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
at the age of 18. Before that, I was diagnosed with Attention
Deficit Disorder, as well as Social Anxiety Disorder.
I am someone that likes to keep to themselves; however, I often
feel isolated and alone. I struggle in social situations. Social
interactions are very draining, exhausting and even scary sometimes.
I have always felt uncomfortable around people, especially those who
are not in my immediate circle. I do not like to be crowded by
people, and I am really affected by too much noise.
When I was in high school, I felt like I had to play a character
role around my peers just to “fit in” and be "normal”. I felt
like I could not be me.
I have panic attacks in public places, sometimes even at the
thought of having to go out in public places. This keeps me from
doing things that may be easy for other people; like getting
groceries, or even just leaving the house.
I have attempted multiple times to try talking to a therapist or
counsellor. Unfortunately the attempts have all failed. Just the
thought of counselling makes me shut down and start to panic.
I am not as comfortable around people as I am with animals,
especially dogs; no judgment, they don’t expect me to act a certain
way, just to be myself.
I have a 14-year-old shih tzu mix who is my best friend and has
helped me through so much. I am fortunate to still have this dog
after 14 years who is, happy and healthy, and full of the zoomies!
A service dog would give me the companionship I need at home and
the comfort and confidence to go out in public. I am hopeful that I
will then build more social skills with this amazing companion by my side.
I am so grateful to have been accepted to receive a K4Paws
Service Dog and your support of this organization to assist me on my
journey is so appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
