In light of=0D=0A COVID-19 and the reality of Zoom fatigue, we will not be hosting a=0D=0A full-day conference. Instead, the mini-conference will be=0D=0A abbreviated and focused on building litigation skills building=0D=0A amongst our members ? in particular, examination-in-chief,=0D=0A cross-examination and cross-examination on an affidavit. =0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A We?ve heard from a number of our=0D=0A members that the questioning of witnesses is one skill set which=0D=0A they continually come across in their practice, including in=0D=0A refugee hearings, immigration appeals, admissibility hearings,=0D=0A detention reviews, PRRA hearings and even in Federal Court practice.=0D=0A But it is a skill for which many of us feel we have inadequate=0D=0A training. How does one conduct a proper and effective=0D=0A examination-in-chief or cross-examination? =0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A The session will review some of the=0D=0A basic 'rules' that distinguish examination-in-chief from=0D=0A cross-examination (and the special skill of cross-examining on an=0D=0A affidavit). But the real goal of the panel is to have speakers who=0D=0A have served as both senior counsel and as decision-makers discuss=0D=0A what techniques and skills they experienced in their careers as=0D=0A being most effective when it comes to questioning witnesses.=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A In addition to the speakers panel, CARL will also be hosting=0D=0A a brief AGM. One of the most important tasks of the AGM=0D=0A is to consider nominations for new members to CARL's Executive and=0D=0A renewals for existing members whose terms have come to an end. If=0D=0A you are interested in nominating someone for CARL's Executive please=0D=0A contact info@carl-acaadr.ca to obtain=0D=0A a nomination form and submit it by Thursday, October 22, 2020.=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A   The event is=0D=0A $20 for CARL members and $30 for non-members. =0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A
