Instructional=0D=0A  designers focus on helping people learn effectively. They work with=0D=0A  schools, universities, businesses, governments, and non-governmental=0D=0A  organizations to design and create a wide range of learning and=0D=0A  training materials. An instructional designer may structure, write, or=0D=0A  edit content for an online course; create a storyboard for a training=0D=0A  module; create a job aid to help someone perform a specific task; and=0D=0A  much, much more.=0D=0A=0D=0AThis workshop will include short presentations, readings, and=0D=0A  discussions and lots of opportunities to practise skills through=0D=0A  in-class exercises and at-home assignments.=0D=0A=0D=0ABy the end of this course, participants will be able to:=0D=0A=0D=0A  Describe the role of an instructional designer, including the=0D=0A    range of activities and tasks instructional designers might be asked=0D=0A    to carry out=0D=0A  Specify the essential skills and knowledge instructional designers=0D=0A    need, including how to analyze audience needs, create learning=0D=0A    objectives, identify learning strategies, and build educational content=0D=0A  Explore how editors and writers may already have these essential=0D=0A    skills, and discuss how to demonstrate this to clients=0D=0A  Create and evaluate prototype instructional materials, including=0D=0A    learning objectives, part of a needs analysis, a high-level course=0D=0A    design plan, and a simple storyboard=0D=0A  Identify different pathways for finding instructional design work=0D=0A    and acquiring additional skills in the field=0D=0A=0D=0A=0D=0A  Liz Warwick is an editor and writer who returned to=0D=0A  Concordia University mid-career to complete a master?s degree in=0D=0A  educational technology. Since then, she has divided her work life=0D=0A  between instructional design and editing. This year, she is helping an=0D=0A  Ontario university bring their courses online, managing several=0D=0A  instructional design projects for a Vancouver-based training company,=0D=0A  editing a romantic fiction trilogy and a book on changing careers, and=0D=0A  serving as branch chair for Editors BC. =0D=0A
