SUMMARY:Stylistic Editing with Carolyn Brown
LOCATION:499 Preston St\, Ottawa\, Ontario
DESCRIPTION:\n \n \n Stylistic Editing\n \n \n\n\n Whether\n you edit novels\, reports\, websites or magazines\, stylistic editing\n is a key skill. Editors Canada’s professional editorial standards\n define stylistic editing as “editing to clarify meaning\, improve\n flow\, and smooth language.” It is the domain of those editors who\n want to communicate: to get the message from the author to the\n reader accurately\, honestly\, and even elegantly. It also relies on\n developing that rare commodity\, editorial judgment.\n\n\n This\n seminar is based on the Editors Canada standards for this skill\, but\n it will also look at how stylistic editing is done in a variety of\n publishing settings. Expectations for stylistic editing can vary\n widely. How can editors adapt to the needs of their employers and clients?\n\n\n We\n will cover\n\n\n The\n context for stylistic editing\n\n\n \n Who\n are the readers\, and how does that determine the approach to\n stylistic editing?\n \n What\n is the medium\, and how does that affect the approach?\n \n What\n is the purpose\, and how does stylistic editing help communicate\n that purpose?\n\n\n Judgment\n in approaching editing decisions\n\n\n \n Paragraph-level\n decisions (length\, structure\, logical flow\, connection with other paragraphs)\n \n Sentence-level\n decisions (length\, sentence construction\, logical flow\,\n connectors\, as well ascommon problems such as passive voice\, noun\n strings\, etc.)\n \n Word-level\n decisions (word choice geared to readers\, omission of unnecessary words)\n\n\n The toolkit\n\n\n \n Subordination\n and coordination\n \n Affirmative constructions\n \n Judicious\n use of passive voice\n \n Disentangling\n noun strings\n \n Resolving ambiguity\n \n Strengthening\n verbs and correcting nominalizations\n \n Reorganizing\n paragraphs and sentences\n \n Gentle rewriting\n \n Working\n with visuals (illustrations\, photos\, tables\, graphs)\n\n\n Communicating\n with authors\n\n\n \n When\n and who to query\n \n Using\n Comments to query\n \n Whether\n and when to use Track Changes \n \n Amount\n and level of editing\n \n When\n to honour the author’s voice\n\n\n The\n approach to this seminar will involve lively discussions\, tales from\n the trenches\, and hands-on exercises. Join us for an enriching and\n informative day devoted to our craft.\n\n\n Instructor\n\n\n \n Carolyn Brown\n \n is a Certified Professional Editor and Editor in the Life\n Sciences. She has edited a wide variety of material for 35 years\,\n specializing in scientific and medical publications for the past\n 25 years. She is the author of the chapter on citation in \n Editing\n Canadian English\n \n 2nd edition and a perennial seminar leader.\n \n
