DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: Crafting a Meaningful Land Acknowledgement: The Why and the How =0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0Awith Rhonda Kronyk=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0AWhen: Saturday, January 27, 2024, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm PST=0D=0A=0D=0AWhere: Online via Zoom=0D=0A=0D=0ASince the Truth and Reconciliation Commission?s final report was=0D=0A released in 2015, land acknowledgements have become an integral part=0D=0A of many events, websites, and email signatures in Canada. But some=0D=0A people question their value. Are these acknowledgements simply ?woke?=0D=0A culture getting out of hand? Are they performative exercises? Or can=0D=0A they be meaningful statements about the lands we call home and the=0D=0A roles Indigenous Peoples have played in stewarding these lands for=0D=0A millennia? This three-hour interactive seminar will give participants=0D=0A the information they need to ensure that their land acknowledgements=0D=0A are sincere.=0D=0A=0D=0ATo guide participants, Rhonda will briefly explain the history and=0D=0A issues related to using land acknowledgements. Using real-life=0D=0A examples, she will show how to research region-specific=0D=0A acknowledgements, what to include, and what to avoid.=0D=0A=0D=0ATwo weeks prior to the seminar, Rhonda will send registered=0D=0A participants a set of questions they can use to draft an=0D=0A acknowledgement prior to the session. Participants are encouraged to=0D=0A submit their draft to Rhonda one week before the event. As time=0D=0A allows, some acknowledgements will be workshopped anonymously during=0D=0A the seminar to help participants understand what to look for in their=0D=0A own work. Participants will then refine their draft during short=0D=0A working sessions =0D=0A=0D=0AParticipants will leave the seminar with a draft of a land=0D=0A acknowledgement that goes beyond those we see and hear. Their personal=0D=0A acknowledgement will not be an empty exercise but will reflect their=0D=0A values and reasons for creating a meaningful statement.=0D=0A=0D=0AThis seminar will be recorded. =0D=0A=0D=0A Rhonda Kronyk is a settler/Dene research, writing,=0D=0A and editing consultant. A member of the Tsay Keh Dene Nation (Treaty=0D=0A 8), she calls amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton) in Treaty 6 home. A=0D=0A founding member of the Indigenous Editors Association, Rhonda provides=0D=0A workshops for publishers and university publishing programs on how to=0D=0A publish culturally respectful stories by and about Indigenous Peoples.=0D=0A She has worked on manuscripts by some of Canada?s best known=0D=0A Indigenous authors.=0D=0A=0D=0AAs passionate as Rhonda is about her work, she steps away from it=0D=0A occasionally to make time for gardening, art, photography, reading,=0D=0A and participating in Edmonton?s incredible array of literary events.=0D=0A Fun fact: before opening her editing business in 2013, Rhonda worked=0D=0A in residential construction doing everything from framing to finishing=0D=0A to cabinet building.=0D=0A
