DESCRIPTION:\n \n \n \n \n Weaving\n subjective musings with theoretical speculation and taking\n the consulting room as a point of departure\, this paper\n explores various themes on the question of identity. Its aim\n is to open questions and lines of inquiry\, rather than to\n articulate a comprehensive theory. I consider identity as\n identification with a social location\, where that social\n location is a function of groups. As such\, identity is\n inherently contingent\, a relational affair\, a soft assembly.\n Identity may not be a particularly psychoanalytic concept\,\n but it is currently being tasked to do considerable work in\n psychoanalysis: specifically\, as a hinge between the dual\n registers of the personal and social unconscious. Like any\n symptom\, the term identity both obscures and indexes\,\n signaling the urgent need for a radical revision of\n psychoanalytic theory. The more we can use\n the contingency of identity — the way we find\n ourselves identified (by others as much as by ourselves) in\n this place and time\, whatever these might be — rather than\n as a fixed category thought to transcend place and time\, the\n more that the concept of identity can be used in a\n specifically psychoanalytic way to help us explore the\n terrain of the political\, which I distinguish from the\n terrain of politics proper. These ideas are employed to\n consider the current moment in psychoanalytic organizational\n life\, which takes place under the sign of a fundamental\n paradigm shift (that is to say: catastrophic change).\n \n \n \n \n
