DESCRIPTION:\n  Fact Checking  \n  \n\nwith Iva Cheung\n  \n\nWhen: Saturday\, April 13\, 2024\, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm\, PDT\nWhere: Online via Zoom\nEditors\, as fact checkers\, are an essential bulwark against\n  misinformation. But knowing what facts to check and how and where to\n  check them requires judgment\, persistence\, and a healthy amount of\n  critical skepticism.\nAfter this three-hour seminar\, participants should be able to:\n\n  name the main ethical and legal issues related to fact checking\,\n  identify which facts editors are expected to check for different\n    genres and types of publications\,\n  evaluate the reliability of information sources\, and\n  list common tools and resources editors use in fact checking.\n\nThis session will include hands-on exercises that will help\n  participants put fact-checking techniques into practice.\nThis seminar will be recorded.\n\n  Iva Cheung is a Certified Professional Editor\,\n  indexer\, publishing consultant\, and policy researcher. She has won the\n  Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence\, President’s Award for\n  Volunteer Service\, and Karen Virag Award for promoting the editing\n  profession. A long-time plain language advocate and scholar\, she\n  joined ASC’s Plain Language Technical Committee as an academic member.\n  She is grateful to live as an uninvited settler on the traditional\,\n  ancestral\, and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓\n  (&gt\;Halkomelem)-speaking peoples\, including the Qayqayt First Nation.
