DESCRIPTION:\n  \n  Friday\, September 18\, 2026\n  \n  9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET | Online\n  \n  \n    Presented by Amar Ghelani PhD\, RSW\n  \n\nAs communities continue to expand alternatives to police-led\n  crisis response\, social workers and mental health professionals are\n  increasingly supporting individuals experiencing mental health and\n  substance use crises in community settings. This practical workshop\n  explores core knowledge and skills for effective mobile crisis\n  intervention\, including engagement\, deescalation\, risk assessment\,\n  safety planning\, brief addiction counselling\, conflict management\,\n  linking clients with community referrals\, advocating for change\,\n  challenging systemic racism\, building constructive relationships\, and\n  to effectively document services. Attendees will learn how to balance\n  client well-being\, client safety\, and community safety while\n  preventing harm and achieving positive program outcomes.\nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to:\n\n  Understand the role and context of mobile crisis intervention in Canada\n  Develop engagement\, deescalation\, and assessment skills for\n    clients with risk to harm themselves or others in community settings\n  Enhance practical crisis intervention skills\, including safety\n    planning\, conflict management\, brief addiction counselling\, and\n    community referral\n\n \nPresenter Bio:\nDr. Ghelani is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) with the\n  University of Toronto Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and\n  Instructor with the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty of Social Work\n  Professional Development program. He is also a social worker with 20\n  years of experience supporting individuals\, families\, and groups with\n  complex mental health concerns. He has worked in healthcare\, addiction\n  treatment\, prisons\, shelters\, schools\, mobile crisis units\, private\n  practice\, and outpatient mental health settings.
