We?ll look at=0D=0A  how to spot common developmental problems in fiction, using the=0D=0A  fundamentals of storytelling (from a Western perspective) as the lens=0D=0A  through which we evaluate fiction manuscripts.=0D=0A=0D=0AThe seminar will cover the following:=0D=0A=0D=0A         how narrative drive is typically achieved through goal?motivation?conflict=0D=0A         types of story structures/plots=0D=0A         how to edit for character development=0D=0A         the importance of genre in editing fiction=0D=0A=0D=0AAt the conclusion of the seminar, you will be able to identify the=0D=0A  differences between developmental editing, copy editing, line editing,=0D=0A  critique/evaluation, and coaching. You will understand the basic=0D=0A  methods of developmental editing (writing effective editorial queries=0D=0A  and thorough but not overwhelming revision letters). You will=0D=0A  understand how to set expectations in a developmental edit, including=0D=0A  differences in working with independent authors and publisher clients.=0D=0A  You will also have a basic idea of how to find developmental editing clients. =0D=0A=0D=0AParticipants will need an Internet connection and access to Microsoft=0D=0A  Word or Google Docs in order to read the provided supplemental=0D=0A  materials (a sample edited manuscript and revision letter). No=0D=0A  previous editorial experience is required, although it will be helpful. =0D=0A=0D=0A  Jennifer Lawler is the founder of Club Ed (www.ClubEdFreelancers.com),=0D=0A  an online education company for developmental editors. If you?re an=0D=0A  aspiring, new, or established book editor or story coach, she can=0D=0A  probably help you learn how to do the work better and more profitably.=0D=0A  Through Club Ed, she offers developmental editing classes, a freelance=0D=0A  editor support group, and a slightly bony shoulder to cry on.=0D=0A=0D=0AJennifer has worked as an editor for more than 20 years. She learned=0D=0A  how to edit in the trenches of traditional publishing with its intense=0D=0A  deadlines, pitiless competition, and crushing bureaucracy. To that she=0D=0A  added a PhD in English literature with a specialization in medieval=0D=0A  literature. Jennifer?s past editorial clients have included Simon=0D=0A  &amp; Schuster, Girl Friday Productions, Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, Barnes=0D=0A  and Noble Custom Publishing, and others, along with many independent authors.=0D=0A=0D=0A  =0D=0A=0D=0A  Seminar=0D=0A  Recording Notice:=0D=0A=0D=0A  Editors BC will be recording these sessions using Zoom?s=0D=0A  record feature.
