DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE: Aligning Expectations: Contracts Between Editors and Indie=0D=0A Authors =0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0Awith =0D=0A Karin Horwatt Cather=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0AWhen: Saturday, March 11, 2023, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm PST=0D=0A=0D=0AWhere: Online via Zoom=0D=0A=0D=0A?Aligning Expectations? will discuss the need for a contract between=0D=0A an editor and an author. This webinar is for freelance editors who are=0D=0A interested in protecting the rights and responsibilities of both=0D=0A editor and author with a written service agreement. A clearly worded=0D=0A service agreement aligns the expectations of both authors and editors,=0D=0A which prevents disagreements and hard feelings on both sides. Aligned=0D=0A expectations between the parties prevent editors from feeling=0D=0A exploited and authors from feeling ripped off.=0D=0A=0D=0APlease note that nothing in this webinar constitutes legal advice and=0D=0A we do not have an attorney?client relationship. Each student is=0D=0A strongly encouraged to consult a legal professional of their own=0D=0A choosing for advice on drafting your service agreement.=0D=0A=0D=0AThis webinar will cover the following:=0D=0A=0D=0A what a service agreement is=0D=0A the pitfalls and ?left turns? in editing projects=0D=0A potential red-flag clients=0D=0A potential scammers=0D=0A the impact of the above on your professional relationship (and=0D=0A your sanity)=0D=0A writing your service agreement=0D=0A ambiguous service agreements=0D=0A nondisclosure and noncompetition clauses=0D=0A clients in breach=0D=0A what to do if you?re accused of being in breach=0D=0A appropriate editor?author communications=0D=0A=0D=0AIn the discussion section, students are encouraged to share ?war=0D=0A stories? and discuss what terms in a service agreement would prevent=0D=0A these problems.=0D=0A=0D=0AAt the conclusion of the seminar, students will be able to identify=0D=0A areas of concern unique to their practice and craft their service=0D=0A agreement terms to protect against these concerns. They will also=0D=0A learn how to respond to problems caused by the author breaking the=0D=0A service agreement or if the author accuses the editor of breaking it=0D=0A and how to craft an appropriate remedy, if any.=0D=0A=0D=0AParticipants will need an internet connection and access to Microsoft=0D=0A Word or Google Docs in order to read the supplemental materials=0D=0A provided (a sample service agreement, sample request for payment,=0D=0A sample communications to authors). No previous editorial experience is=0D=0A required, but it can?t hurt.=0D=0A=0D=0A Karin Horwatt Cather is a former prosecutor and child=0D=0A welfare attorney who left the practice of law in 2013 in order to care=0D=0A for a disabled family member. Karin earned a certificate from UC=0D=0A Berkeley Extension online in the professional sequence in editing (a=0D=0A one-year program), read widely, and lurked heavily on Facebook editing=0D=0A pages before opening her virtual doors in early 2015. Karin also=0D=0A attended the Editing Goes Global conference sponsored by Editors=0D=0A Canada in 2015. Karin was the project manager for a book entitled=0D=0A From Contact to Contract: How Editors Get Clients to Work With=0D=0A Them (published by Editors Canada) and co-authored a book with=0D=0A Dick Margulis entitled The Paper It?s Written On: Defining Your=0D=0A Relationship with an Editing Client. Karin specializes in=0D=0A developmental, structural, line, and copyediting, as well as=0D=0A manuscript evaluations of detective fiction, dystopian fiction (also=0D=0A known as Tuesday), fantasy, science fiction, speculative fiction, and=0D=0A memoirs written by first responders and attorneys. Karin also=0D=0A ghostwrites novels in those genres.=0D=0A=0D=0AKarin?s police procedural/science fiction crossover, A Million=0D=0A Monkeys,is currently on the virtual desk of a developmental=0D=0A editor, and the sequel, Sick Puppies, will be ready for=0D=0A editing in February. Karin has a black belt in a martial art called=0D=0A Tactical Black Krav Maga and relies on that training in evaluating the=0D=0A accuracy of written violence in fiction.=0D=0A=0D=0A =0D=0A=0D=0A Seminar=0D=0A Recording Notice:=0D=0A=0D=0A Editors BC will be recording these sessions using Zoom?s=0D=0A record feature. The data captured may include your image (including=0D=0A your name if it appears in your video image) and voice recordings. The=0D=0A Zoom recordings will be made available to registered seminar=0D=0A participants for a period of two weeks following the session. After=0D=0A that time, the recording will no longer be available to participants.=0D=0A If you have any questions or concerns about the recording, please=0D=0A contact Claire Majors at pd@editorsbc.ca.
