DESCRIPTION:\n  \n    \n      Developing a federal plain language standard for accessibility \n    \n  \n\nWhen:  Wednesday\, January 17\, 7:30 to 8:30 pm PST\nWhere: Online through Zoom \n    \n  \n\nCost:    Editors Canada members\, free\; non-members\, $10\; student\n  non-members\, $5\nThe Accessible Canada Act became law in 2019\, committing the federal\n  government to the goal of a barrier-free Canada by 2040. The federal\n  public sector\, Crown corporations\, and federally regulated industries\n  must follow certain accessibility standards to reduce barriers for\n  people with disabilities.\nPlain language is a key component of accessibility. In the fall of\n  2020\, Accessibility Standards Canada (ASC) assembled the Plain\n  Language Technical Committee to develop a federal plain language\n  standard. Committee member Iva Cheung will give an overview of how the\n  committee developed the plain language standard\, what communications\n  and industries will be affected\, and how this standard might be used.\n  Iva will also comment on how this effort fits into the history and\n  future of plain language\, standards\, and editing in Canada\, including\n  its relationship to the recently published ISO (International\n  Standards Organization) plain language standard. You’ll also learn how\n  to give your input when the standards become available for public\n  review in a couple of months.\n\n  Iva Cheung is a Certified Professional Editor\,\n  indexer\, publishing consultant\, and policy researcher. She has won the\n  Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence\, President’s Award for\n  Volunteer Service\, and Karen Virag Award for promoting the editing\n  profession. A long-time plain language advocate and scholar\, she\n  joined ASC’s Plain Language Technical Committee as an academic member.\n  She is grateful to live as an uninvited settler on the traditional\,\n  ancestral\, and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓\n  (Halkomelem)-speaking peoples\, including the Qayqayt First Nation.\n\n  Note: This meeting will NOT be recorded.
