We’re excited to invite you to take part in the Cougar Creek Restoration Workshop, hosted in partnership by the B.C. Wildlife Federation and the Cougar Creek Streamkeepers. This hands-on, community-based event offers a unique opportunity to support salmon habitat restoration, learn about local environmental issues, and contribute directly to creek stewardship.

Why Participate?

The Cougar Creek watershed continues to experience pressures associated with urbanization, including:

  • Ongoing urban densification leading to greater impervious surface coverage.

  • Increased stormwater runoff and reduced groundwater recharge.

  • Flashier, more destructive creek flows that damage habitat.

  • Elevated pollutant concentrations, including 6PPD-Q from tire dust.

In addition, the riparian corridor is narrow and faces multiple human-related stressors, such as:

  • Litter accumulation and anthropogenic disturbance.

  • Proliferation of invasive species.

  • Insufficient shading and riparian vegetation to support healthy stream temperatures and ecosystem resilience.

Through this workshop, we aim to improve spawning and rearing conditions for salmonids by:

  • Completing hands-on habitat restoration activities—such as riparian planting, invasive species removal, and in-stream weir construction.
  • Exploring the ecological role of beavers, the benefits of beaver dam analogues (BDAs).
  • Temperature monitoring to support cooler, more complex stream habitats ideal for juvenile salmon development.

Participants will be guided by restoration professionals and local stewardship leaders. Additional features include educational displays, monitoring demonstrations, and discussions on future habitat plans for Cougar Creek.

Who Should Join?
We welcome community members, students, environmental professionals, streamkeeper groups, and local employees interested in contributing to salmon recovery. Families are encouraged to attend—there will be accessible activities for all ages. We hope to see you there!

Upon registering, you will receive a confirmation email. Seven to ten business days before the workshop, you’ll receive an information package with full event details, including the meeting location.
