About the Presenters:

James Klassen, RoofStar Technical Advisor/Claims Examiner
Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia (RCABC)

James Klassen is a RoofStar Technical Advisor and staff writer with the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia. In addition to his work responding to technical queries, James contributes to education and policy development for sustainable ‘green roof’ design. James led the development of the RoofStar Vegetated Roof Guarantee and chaired the volunteer advisory committee that developed the Standard for Vegetated Roofs. He also writes for and manages the online Roofing Practices Manual, participates in numerous CSA task groups responsible for several roofing standards, and is a voting member of the CSA-A123 Technical Committee on Roofing. He is an experienced roofing estimator, a former Occupational Health and Safety professional, and independent insurance claims adjuster, and has extensive experience managing facilities and transportation for a large private school in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley.

James is an accomplished sailor and loves to explore the British Columbia coast with his 34-foot sailboat, Elysium.

About the Topic:
RCABC’s Guarantee for Vegetated Roofs: A new future for green roofing in British Columbia

Vegetated (green) roofs can be a wonderful asset to any building. Not only are they beautiful, but they also help manage stormwater collection and discharge from roofs (often a municipal requirement), soften outside sounds heard inside a building, add warmth and help cool a building (great for older structures), provide a home and safe foraging for birds and insects, and extend the service life of the roof membrane that supports it all. The list of benefits goes on.

With all the good things that green roofs can do, they often get a bad rap. It’s not their fault. The issues green roofs are blamed for often lie with the roof that supports it – poorly designed or built without the care and support an RCABC member contractor brings. But sometimes green roofs fail because things like the growing media (soil) that are critical to its success are switched for ‘cheaper’, less reliable materials.

The RCABC Vegetated Roof Guarantee is changing all that. This new program translates the tried-and-true Quality Control/Quality Assurance formula of the RoofStar Guarantee Program for the green roofing industry, combining membership requirements with a rigorous Standard, sampling and testing, trained installers and maintenance contractors, competent project management, and third-party observations. Combined with required maintenance paid for in advance by owners, t is, by its nature, a risk-managed approach to green roofing that will benefit owners and instill confidence among designer, regulators, and other stakeholders.
