Current Keelboat Course Offerings:
Start Keelboat Sailing A friendly, hands-on introduction to keelboat sailing for complete beginners. Price: $395 (maximum 4 students) Prerequisites: None Program Description The Start Keelboat S ailing Standard is an entry-level course for those who are new to sailing and want to build confidence on the water. Students learn essential skills at a comfortable pace over two full days afloat. Instruction takes place on an 8.3m or 9m keelboat with a certified instructor in Burrard Inlet. When underway the vessel may exhibit irregular motion due to wind and waves and temperatures may be cooler than on land. Participants should be prepared for moderate physical activity and variable weather. By the end of the course, students will be able to contribute competently as crew on a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. Successful graduates earn the Sail Canada Start Keelboat Sailing certification. Program Offerings: Class 1: May 2 & 9 (Saturdays) – 9:00am to 5:00pm – Afloat Class Additional classes may be available upon request – email keelboatschool@rpsa.ca Location: Rocky Point Pier (Port Moody) Included Materials: Online web-based training course to prepare students. Student workbook , Sail Canada Logbook and examination Basic Cruising - Day Sailing (3 Week Format) A comprehensive introduction to keelboat cruising with both ashore and afloat components. Price: $895 (maximum 4 students) Prerequisites: None Program Description The Basic Cruising Standard introduces participants with little or no sailing experience to keelboat fundamentals, in both a classroom and afloat sessions leading to potential certification as a Sail Canada Skipper or Competent Crew, and a Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate. Short periods of moderate upper body exertion, and a moderate level of arm strength will be required . The course covers knots, points of sail, tacking, gybing, navigation, anchoring, docking, motoring, and safety, with hands-on practice on either an 8.3 or 9m keelboat in Port Moody. With a small group and certified instructors, it’s an engaging pathway into sailing as a skipper or crew member. Program Offerings: Class 1:

Price: $975 (maximum 4 students) Prerequisites: None Program Description This four-day intensive version of the Basic Cruising Standard delivers foundational skills in a compressed, immersive format. Short periods of moderate upper body exertion, and a moderate level of arm strength will be required . The course covers knots, points of sail, tacking, gybing, navigation, anchoring, docking, motoring, and safety, with hands-on practice on either an 8.3 or 9m keelboat in Port Moody. With a small group and certified instructors, it’s an engaging pathway into sailing as a skipper or crew member and can open the door to local sailing club activities. Program Offerings: Class 1: April 20, 21, 22, 23 (Monday–Thursday) – 9:00am to 5:00pm daily – Afloat Class Class 2: July 14, 15, 16, 17 (Tuesday–Friday) – 9:00am to 5:00pm daily – Afloat Class Location: Rocky Point Pier, Port Moody Included Materials: Basic Cruising textbook , Sail Canada Logbook and examination Intermediate Cruising - 6-Day Liveaboard A live-aboard cruising experience that builds advanced skills for extended voyages. Price: $1,695 (maximum 3 students) Required Prerequisites: Basic Cruising Standard , Basic Coastal Navigation Standard , Radio Operator Certificate (Marine) , 100 Nautical Miles sailing experience Recommended Prerequisites: First Aid , 10 days as skipper , 200 Nautical Miles experience Program Description The Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising Standard prepares students to operate a sailing vessel by day in unfamiliar waters. This six-day live-aboard course covers coastal navigation, passage / pilotage planning, advanced docking, anchoring, handling emergencies , and boat systems/ maintenance . Students take on increasing responsibility under the guidance of a certified instructor aboard a 9m keelboat. Most meals are included, with students purchasing three meals ashore. The course provides an immersive learning environment in the Gulf Islands and/or Sunshine Coast and upon successful completion, earn a Sail Canada Intermediate Cruising certification, a valuable step toward being able to charter a boat. Included Materials: Online web-based training course to prepare students. Charts and plotting tools , s tudy materials , most meals (3 meals out are student-paid) , f uel , moorage , pump out fees and examination . Additional Notes: Students live aboard for the full duration of the course.
Additional Information:
What to Wear: Dress in layers, you will be surprised how much temperature difference there is between the shore and on the boat in a light breeze. Synthetic or wool fabrics are preferable. Cotton and Denim are not recommended as once they get wet, they stay wet and cold. -Sunny: bring a light windbreaker, hat, sunglasses, and sunblock. -Rainy: a rain jacket, rain pants, rain hat or hood -Please pack a full change of clothing Footwear -Closed toed shoes are required; no sandals or flip flops please. -Soles must be non-marking (white, light grey or cream color only). -Rainy: waterproof footwear will be necessary. -Sunny: fast drying non-slip runners Sailing Gloves -Gloves are recommended to protect your hands. Motion Sickness If you are prone to motion sickness or are unsure if you are prone to motion sickness, it is strongly recommended you talk to a pharmacist or doctor regarding motion sickness medication There are non-drowsy types of anti-nausea medicine. We’re unable to provide this type of medication to our students. Payment Terms and Cancellation Policy All balances are due 5 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made 10+ days prior to the course start date will be subject to a 10% cancellation fee. The remainder will be refunded via the original method of payment. Cancellations made less than 10 days prior to the course start date are ineligible for a refund. We cannot accept any changes less than 10 days prior to the course start date. Trip Disruption If a disruption of the course occurs due to a major breakdown of the vessel (through no fault of the student) RPSA will issue a credit for additional time on the boat/program. |
