About the Presenters:

Brad Carmichael, PE, BEMP, CPHC
4EA Building Science

Brad is a Principal with 4EA Building Science in Seattle. As an engineer and building scientist, Brad has been specializing in the design of durable and energy efficient building enclosures for more than two decades. Throughout North America, Brad has consulted on a wide array of different project types and sectors, including high rises, healthcare facilities, cultural institutions, workspaces, affordable housing, and historic landmarks. Much of his current work focuses on the intersection between decarbonization and housing affordability in the built environment.

About the Topic:
Brutal Honesty –Architectural Exposed Concrete in the Pacific Northwest

Concrete is a unique enclosure material– it can be both architectural and structural, it can be finished or left as-is, and it can be reasonably watertight or prone to leaking.

Architectural exposed concrete is a challenging material to work with, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Our weather soaks it and stains it, and our ground moves it and shakes it. This presents risks and challenges that be accounted for during design. Is this a challenge to take on, or something to be avoided altogether?

During this presentation, Brad Carmichael, PE, BEMP, CPHC of 4EA Building Sciences will discuss strategies and approaches for designing with architecturally exposed concrete in our region – both precast and cast-in-place. This will include considerations related to architectural intent, durability risks, weather exposure, water control, condensation, thermal bridging, and carbon footprint.

Learning Objectives:
1. The presentation will review the architectural benefits of concrete
2. To understand the limits and risks of exposed concrete to weather conditions
3. Review design approaches to manage moisture risks of exposed concrete in new design
4. To review durability risks for aging exposed concrete structures
