 Description

 The Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) program includes up-to-date, best practice and evidence-informed palliative care knowledge, utilizing the innovative Partnering for Palliative Education learning environment, powered by D2L Brightspace.

Due to continuous changes in hospice and palliative care, we recommend re-taking CAPCE every five years.


  New to CAPCE

  • The Fundamentals Enhanced program is now part of the CAPCE program
  • Completion of the Indigenous Cultural Safety Training, through Canadian Virtual Hospice (CVH), is now a required part of CAPCE.  There are five modules in the series (approx. 1 hr each), and the training is free of charge.  We recommend you complete this training 2-3 weeks prior to the start of CAPCE.  To complete the training, create an account with Canadian Virtual Hospice, log into your account, and then complete the training.

Eligibility & Pre-requisite

Learners must:

  • be NPs, RNs or RPNs Learn more>
  • have completed Fundamentals of HPC (or Equivalent ) within the past five years.  Proof is required – please submit your Fundamentals certificate  here!

There is a significant amount of course work required in CAPCE, and thus we encourage you have the support of your manager, especially around shift scheduling, as learners are expected to attend all classroom sessions.

Course Overview

The Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) program includes up-to-date, best practice and evidence-informed palliative care knowledge, utilizing the innovative Partnering for Palliative Education learning environment, powered by D2L Brightspace.

Over 18 weeks, local palliative care nurse consultant coaches, prepare CAPCE learners to meet the palliative care competencies for nurses as outlined in the Ontario Palliative Care Competency Framework and the Canadian Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Competency Framework.

Course Content

The CAPCE  course takes approximately 72.5 hours to complete; learners will have eighteen weeks to complete the course in its entirety.

  • On Aug 26, 2026, learners will receive a course welcome email, and an email from Brightspace with details for logging into the e-learning platform
  • The first online classroom session is scheduled for Sep 2, 2026

Certificates  will be issued upon successful completion of, and active participation in, all course components.  Incomplete attendance or non-participation (e.g., camera off, multitasking) may affect the issuing of your certificate.
