Series Description
Social work is meaningful work, but it carries real psychological
demands: trauma exposure, emotional labour, ethical tension, and
workplace conditions that can wear practitioners down over time. This
three-part series helps social work students build the foundation for
a sustainable career before they enter the field.
Students will learn to recognize the occupational risks specific to
social work, explore their own helping patterns and boundaries, and
discover how to intentionally build peer support and professional
community from the start of their careers. The series emphasizes that
well-being is not solely an individual responsibility; it is shaped by
workplaces and systems too.
Please note: while the events are geared towards social work
students, all social work professionals are welcome to attend.
Presenter
Amanda Rocheleau,
BSW, MSW, RSW
, is a social worker and professional speaker based in Ottawa,
Ontario. With 20 years of experience in the field and a bachelor's
and master's degree in Social Work from Carleton University, Amanda
has developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by
helping professionals in healthcare, social services, education, and
public service settings.
Her journey began
with a deep commitment to community work, but after nearly a decade
in the field, she saw how widespread burnout was among her
colleagues and felt it herself. She began to ask: how can we sustain
the energy and resiliency to continue helping in such a complex and
troubling world? This question sparked her passion for helping
others navigate occupational stress and build resilience, shaping
the foundation of her current work.
As the founder of
her own private practice, Amanda offers counselling and consulting
services to help individuals and organizations reduce the risk of
psychological injuries and burnout. Her practical delivery approach
has resonated with over 800 professional and conference groups
across Canada, where she has been featured as a speaker and trainer
on positive workplace practices and personal well-being. Amanda has
also created workshops, online courses, workbooks, and a podcast
called The
Giving Tree Podcast
, all designed to help individuals and organizations build
resilience and promote sustainable well-being.
