Event DescriptionThis session is a foundational, entry-level conversation focused on unpacking, understanding, and acknowledging the history of anti-blackness in social work and social service provisions and the mental and physical impacts on Black social service users. To unpack impacts, this session will be grounded in a conversation on Black Racial trauma in Black service users as a product of systemic and interpersonal discriminations and the effects on Black clients and service providers when working through engagement and retention, assessment, and care planning. The session will end on quick tips and thought points to extend the conversation of implementing trauma informed, anti-racist, and critical race methodologies when working with Black individuals in social services across a myriad of contexts. Biography of Presenter:Renata Hall is a PhD candidate, co-creator of the Learning in Colour digital platform, and Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education Manager at McMaster University. Renata lives all things social justice; she has a history of social service work in housing and homelessness, mental health, black racial trauma, and VAW-GBV sectors working predominantly with complex and intersectional clients. Currently, Renata grounds her social service in counseling, teaching, and research pursuits as a conduit for building community connections, challenging the status quo, and amplifying the voices of the margins across the GTA.
