Exploring Preferred Stories in Narrative Therapy for Depression Presented by the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) Workshop Description There is a high prevalence of people of all ages experiencing depression and seeking out professional help. This workshop will highlight and explore the effectiveness of Narrative Therapy approaches to aid those with depressive thoughts, emotions and behaviours in elevating hopefulness. Join Angel Yuen in this full day online workshop where we will extend the introductory learning from the webinar ‘Narrative Therapy: Re-Authoring Stories of Depression’. Together we will explore more ideas and practices that shape narrative therapy in relation to working with people struggling with depression. Additionally, there will be a focus of the politics and ethics that guide narrative therapy practices. This full day training will also allow opportunity for practice exercises and discussion in breakout rooms. By the end of this workshop, learners will:
Pre-Requisite This workshop will be suited to social workers, social service workers, and students who are new(er) to the ideas of narrative therapy . It will also be of interest to those who are familiar with and wanting a refresher on narrative ideas. Mostly this full -day workshop will be relevant to all service providers seeking hopeful and effective ways of working with depression. For anyone new to Narrative Therapy the prerequisite for this course is the webinar titled ‘Narrative Therapy: Re-authoring Stories of Depression’ on April 4, 2024. Those who already have a beginning foundation of the ideas that shape narrative therapy would be suited to participate in this full-day workshop. Workshop Instructor Angel Yuen (MSW, RSW) works as a narrative therapist and clinical supervisor in alternative-private practice in Durham region. She also offers tailored narrative trainings and consultation to many organizations. Angel’s previous work spanning three decades included experiences in school, community, and adult and children’s mental health settings. A s a co-founder of the Narrative Therapy Centre , Angel has facilitated several narrative workshops locally, internationally and virtually. Within these spaces she continually is honoured to share hopeful stories, skills and wisdom of the people who consult with her. She is the author of the 2019 book ‘ Pathways beyond despair: Re-authoring lives of young people through narrative therapy ’ and also is co-editor with Cheryl White of the 2007 book ‘ Conversations about gender, culture, violence and narrative practice ’ .
