SEO for Editors

SEO for Editors with Lisa Manfield

Search engine optimization, or SEO, encompasses a wide variety of tactics designed to improve a site’s ranking in search results. Ensuring web content ranks high in a Google search is one of the best ways for website owners to drive traffic and potential customers to their site. Web editors can play an instrumental role in optimizing content for better search rankings, both on their own site and for web-based client projects.

This six-hour workshop will cover how search works and provide an overview of the fundamentals of SEO, including:

  • The evolution of SEO
  • Critical ranking factors that determine where your content is listed on a search results page
  • How to conduct an SEO audit of your site
  • How to research and implement keywords in your copy
  • Additional strategies for optimizing the content on your site
  • The role of online marketing to boost rankings and visibility

Throughout the workshop we will work both individually and in groups to examine websites, conduct research, and complete writing and editing exercises.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and explain fundamental factors that impact a site’s ranking on Google
  • Conduct a site audit for SEO
  • Research appropriate website keywords
  • Optimize website content for search—both on the front end of the site, and the back end
  • Make use of other online marketing tactics to increase search rankings

Participants should be comfortable working on a computer and surfing the web, but no additional technical experience is required. Please come with a website in mind that you would like to work on, or a new ideal for a site that doesn’t yet exist. This will form the context for some of our exercises.

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops (with access to a web browser and word processing tool). If this isn’t possible, there may be limited opportunities to share a laptop with another participant.
