Eight-Step Editing
 Description

Eight-Step Editing

Eight-Step Editing teaches an approach to editing that helps writers and editors alike. Everyone who has ever clarified a sentence in an email, a report, or another written work can benefit from this workshop.

This newly updated workshop breaks down the task of editing into a sequence of actions to improve and clarify text while retaining the author’s voice. The steps are designed to reduce the effort required of the reader, improve the energy level of your writing, and make information easier to process and understand.

Workshop outline:

Step 1: Shorten sentences.
Step 2: Take out the trash.
Step 3: Deflate fat words.
Step 4: Reduce negatives.
Step 5: Eliminate the equations.
Step 6: Activate the passives.
Step 7: Lead with strength.
Step 8: Tune up topic sentences.

Participants will receive a workbook with exercises and further explanations of the eight steps. Please note that registration rates include a $10 charge to cover the cost of producing the workbook.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • systematically improve their own writing
  • break down the editorial process into a series of manageable tasks
  • improve the readability of documents
  • understand the way people read today

Note: This course does not teach the mechanics of editing (i.e., spelling, grammar, and punctuation).
