2019 Spring Instructor and Coaching Courses

Fundamental:

The Fundamental Course is a two-day in-class theory course and an important prerequisite for all other instructing and coaching courses.  The Fundamental covers the key principles behind teaching and coaching coaching including professionalism, ethics, risk management, planning a practice, teaching methods and skill development.

CANSail Technical:

The CANSail Technical is where instructors will use the theory from the Fundamental to teach a group of sailors in a hands-on and realistic learning environment.  The majority of this course is spent instructing on the water.  Instructors will also be assessed on their CANSail sailing skills and knowledge in both a practical evaluation and written exam.
Prerequisites: CANSail Fundamental, CANSail saiing prerequisite & Pleasure Craft Operator Card 
Check the Sail Canada website for more information on the sailing level required for technical courses.

Coach Boat Safety:

Coach Boat Safety is a one-day on-water practical course.  In this course, instructors and coaches will review important safety components for teaching on the water and will be required to demonstrate practice skills in a variety of standard coaching scenarios.  There is also a written exam to test the theory covered in the Coach Boat Safety manual.

Prerequisites: Pleasure Craft Operator Card and First Aid (Standard Level with CPR C)

Program Manager:

The Program Manager module is open to instructors and others looking to take on an administrative role within their learn to sail program.  Topics covered include marketing, registration, communication and safety.

Wet Feet/Opti Module:

The Wet Feet and Opti Module is a one-day professional development course designed for instructors and coaches who will be working with young sailors ages 5 to 13 in optimist dinghies. The emphasis is on correct rigging on coaching techniques for working with young sailors.

Opti Race:

This course is designed for instructors and coaches with previous optimist coaching experience and those who will be working with CANSail 3 & 4 level sailors in Optis or novice Opti race teams.  Candidates will work with optimist race team sailors and the focus is on developing racing skills and learning new coaching techniques.

Spinnaker & Trapeze:

The Spin and Trap module is a professional development course focusing specifically on double-handed boats, primarily the Club 420.  This course emphasizes correct rigging and coaching techniques for double-handed skill development, with some discussion about high performance 29ers and 470s.

Community Instructors

The Community Instructor course is for new coaches who want to start as an assistant coach or volunteer with a sailing program.  The Community Instructor module will focus on optimists, with some discussion of other training boats for youth sailors like 420s and FJs.

Salty Sisters

Salty Sisters is a set of lessons designed exclusively for women. These lessons follow the principles of CANSail, but without certification as the aim is develop female sailors at their own pace and at whatever experience level they bring with them. This coaching clinic will train coaches in the philosophy and implementation of Salty Sisters programming.3 Professional Development Points

Waitlist:

As courses fill up, a waitlist will become available.  If you are interested in the course, please sign up for the waitlist (no charge) and you will be contacted as space becomes available.  If a spot becomes available, waitlisted applicants will receive an email and will have 2 days to respond.  Coaches may also sign up for both the waitlist and another course for which space is available, and should a spot open up in the waitlisted course, the coach can be transferred to the waitlited course.  It is likely that spots open up closer to the course date.
