About The Day

Morning Session

The Absent Witness: Mourning, Virtually

Is it possible for us to mourn the losses of 2020 and 2021 when, in 2022, we are at best semi-post-Covid?  Do we analysts have the requisite psychic and reflective space to help our patients with something that continues to upend the quotidian for all of us?

This presentation explores the impact of existential crises (Covid, political, social, and climate) on our and our patients' ability to mourn within and outside analytic space.

Afternoon Session

Sequel: Can We Transcend the Transference

Therapeutic sequels—post-termination friendships between therapist and patient—are an open secret.  Although they are hardly uncommon, sequels are rarely named, much less explored.  Using the unfinished story of a good treatment and its yet-to-be-defined ending to illustrate, I query and unpack thecomplexities of treatment sequels for both patient and therapist.

Learning Objectives

After attending this workshop, participants should be able to:

1) describe the mourning process and what limits it today;

2) define the termination ideal and examine its utility and problematic elements;

3)  elucidate the power dynamics inherent in analysis —when, whether, and how they might shift toward a more mutual and egalitarian connection, and when such power dynamics remain in ways that are problematic and contaminating for both parties.
