EHYC Sailing School - Summer 2024 Programs
 Description

Eagle Harbour Yacht Club Sailing School

Eagle Harbour Yacht Club (EHYC) is perched on the beautiful West Vancouver coastline, on Eagle Harbour Road off Marine Drive, beside Eagle Harbour Beach where we have a protected harbour within which to offer our summer sailing school and camps.

Our address is 5750 Eagle Harbour Road

Please take your time driving along Eagle Harbour Road as there are many young children, dogs, and pedestrians in our neighborhood who also use this road.

We look forward  to having your child spend part of the summer with us, enjoying water-based activities with their friends, new and old. This year we have five courses to choose from, according to age and skill level. You can learn to sail from age 7 - as long as you turn 7 by the end of the year. We introduce basic sailing skills and develop existing skills, with our coaches tailoring instruction around the sailor's individual needs, creating a fun summer with their friends and unforgettable memories. Our classes at Eagle Harbour YC are purposely small, to offer maximum safety and quality instruction. Friendships are an integral part of the fun of sailing, and we encourage you to sign up a buddy to share the experience.

ALL COURSES WILL RUN WEEKLY PROVIDED  MINIMUM CLASS SIZES ARE ACHIEVED.

Each weekly course runs from Monday to Friday, 9 am-4 pm. They break for lunch, where the sailors eat at our beach. There may be days with too much wind, or no wind, where we either utilize our paddleboards and kayaks, or have a host of fun activities either on the beach, in the clubhouse, or for a short walk to the local park.

How Much?

The cost of the one-week course is $ 450 for a 5-day camp and $ 360 for the 4-day camp (due to the Stat holidays). The cost of a two-week course is $ 900 for the 10-day camp and $ 810 for the 9-day camp.

We recommend you register early to choose the date you want with your friends as courses will fill quickly.

Course Descriptions

Wet Feet (Opti Intro):   A gentle one-week introduction to sailing in Optimist dinghies for children  7 -9 years  of age who have no sailing experience. Multiple weeks may be booked at this level - our focus is safety and fun on the water.

Opti Basic:  Upon completion  of Wet Feet, children  7 -9 years  of age can begin developing their sailing skills in Optimist dinghies during these one-week courses. CANSail1 material will be introduced at this level. Multiple weeks may be booked at this level - our focus is safety and fun on the water.

CANSail 1:  A two-week course for children  10+  years of age, who are beginning their journey in sailing or progressing from Opti Basic. This is an entry-level course that teaches fundamental sailing skills including basic sheeting, steering, and boat handling on all points of sail using double-handed dinghies. Upon completion, sailors can sail within defined boundaries set by an instructor. Please choose a 'Week 1' course followed by a 'Week 2' course. Two weeks of CANSail1 are required to move on to CANSail2.

CANSail 2:   A two-week course that builds on the skills learned in CANSail 1. This teaches sailors to adjust their bodies and boats for changes in direction and wind speed while sailing and to perform boat-handling maneuvers in a controlled manner while in a controlled setting. Please choose a 'Week 1' course followed by a 'Week 2' course. Two weeks of CANSail2 are required to move on to CANSail3.

CANSail 3: A two-week course that refines the skills learned in CANSail2 and introduces the sailor to intermediate sailing techniques. This focuses on boat speed, applied technical skills, and maneuver efficiency. Sailors will be exposed to a greater variety of conditions. Please choose a 'Week 1' course followed by a 'Week 2' course. Two weeks of CANSail3 are required to move on to CANSail4.

CANSail 4:   A two-week course that further develops skills learned in CANSail3. This teaches sailors advanced boat handling and proficiency in a variety of conditions, as well as how to execute maneuvers in a competitive setting for tactical and strategic advantage.  Two weeks of CANSail4 are required to pass this level,  as well, sailors are to participate in a one or two-day regatta. Please choose a 'Week 1' course followed by a 'Week 2' course.  CANSail 4 is required for those sailors wishing to become a Sail Canada CANSail instructor!

Structure

Our summer program consists of 3 sessions (A, B, and C), each two weeks long. In order for a student to fully complete a  CANSail  course and receive certification they must attend Week 1 of a session, followed by Week 2 of any session. These do not need to be taken consecutively. For example, a student could complete Session A Week 1 and Session B Week 2 in order to finish their desired  CANSail  course. If you only intend to register for one week, please ensure you book a week 1 course before booking a week 2 course.

As our courses and camps are focused on water activities, it is important that your child be comfortable around the water and know how to swim. • Towel

  • Rain gear

Change of Date and Cancellation Policy

Should you need to withdraw from a previously registered course, and your request is received more than 14 days prior to the beginning of the course start date, a cancellation fee of $100 will be deducted from the refund amount. $35 is charged for changing a course.

Within 14 days of the start of the course, refunds are only issued for medical reasons.  When registering please keep in mind that these camps are full days on the water with a break for lunch. While we try our best to ensure everyone has a good time in our program, we cannot guarantee that your child will enjoy the activity as must as most do.  Not liking the water , not getting along with the other kids, or not liking sailing are not grounds for a refund.

For our part, EHYC will endeavor to offer a full complement of courses based on the published schedule, however in the event that a specific course does not attract sufficient registration, we will reach out to you in as timely a manner as possible and do our best to accommodate our mutual schedules. We do however reserve the right to cancel a course that has less than 4 participants registered, in which case you could either register for another session in our schedule or receive a full refund.
