Business Processes - Practical Techniques and Frameworks
 Description

Globally popular business process management guru Alec Sharp is back in town this February. Don't miss out on this top-rated speaker!

Professionals with skills in working with business processes are in a great position. Organisations everywhere are making serious efforts to improve or transform their processes, and they need help!  That’s true for commercial, government, and not-for-profit enterprises, of all sizes. Why? Because organisations must understand what they do, and how they do it, if they are to improve in a sustainable way. Studying business processes reveals what an organisation really does (or should do) to deliver value, how it does it now, and how it will do it in future.

It sounds straightforward, but in practice, organisations struggle with their process change efforts. Common problems are:

  • Focusing on fragments of a process instead of identifying a true end-to-end business process;
  • Ignoring the inherent resistance to “process;”
  • Failing to use a compelling approach to depict processes and their issues;
  • Mapping (or modelling) them in a way that is either trivial, or incomprehensible to mere mortals;
  • Not performing the holistic analysis and redesign that is necessary for sustainable change.

This presentation will provide immediate guidance in getting past these difficulties with a mix of proven techniques, practical frameworks, and savvy tips, all backed up with real-life examples from a variety of disciplines. It covers methods for introducing business process concepts, gaining the support of colleagues, discovering and scoping true end-to-end processes, modelling processes, and completing a holistic assessment leading to effective redesign.

Highlights include:

  • What a business process really is, why they are so often misidentified, and the consequences;
  • How to make the need for process improvement compelling yet blame-free;
  • Why bottom-up techniques for process discovery are usually more effective than top-down ones;
  • “Flow first, detail later” - the basics of “human-oriented” process mapping;
  • Stakeholder and enabler-based methods for ensuring the new process isn’t worse than the old one.
