Comprehensive Advanced Palliative Care Education (CAPCE) - Online Fall 2023

Please note:  In-person CBL classroom sessions will pivot to online CBL classroom sessions, if recommended by Public Health.  See current course IPAQ Requirements

Eligibility Criteria/Pre-requisites:

CAPCE is designed for NPs, RNs, and RPNs with passion and expertise in palliative care - see  Eligibility Criteria  and Pre-requisites:

• Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care
• Fundamentals Enhanced

Why APPS?

• Peer-reviewed, evidence-informed and up-to-date course content
• Facilitation and mentorship by experienced local palliative care nurse consultants
• Successful completion of APS prepares learners to meet the palliative care competencies for PSWs as outlined in the Ontario Palliative Care Competency Framework and Canadian Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Competency Framework.

Course Overview

This 8-week online course builds upon the Fundamentals of HPC Program, and focuses on the PSW’s scope of practice relating to the foundational concepts of HPC. 

Participants will learn/develop skills and strategies for:

• enhancing communication with the person, family, and team members
• effective team functioning and self-care
• relieving common end-of-life symptoms.

Course Structure

• Self-Directed Learning Activities  - All course work / materials are provided online using the Brightspace Learning Environment; thus, learners are required to use a computer, tablet or smart phone to participate.
• Three Virtual Classroom Sessions scheduled three weeks apart allow time for online, self-directed reading/activities and applying learning to daily practice. Learners attend the three classroom sessions online - via a link that will be provided. 

Please note:  This course requires learners to interact with their peers and facilitators during these virtual classroom sessions.

Course Availability

Between the course Start Date and the first Classroom Session (CS), participants are expected to log into the learning platform to complete Self-Directed Learning Activities.
