2020 Wetlands Institute Speaker Series:

Wetlands and Legal Frameworks

When
: November 4th, 2020, 9am to 12pm
Where:  Hosted virtually over Zoom.
Cost NO CHARGE (valued at $100)

Due to COVID-19, The BC Wildlife Federation's Wetlands Insitute has been formatted into a virtual Speaker Series- a series of stand-alone webinars and workshops hosted throughout the Fall, covering topics that are of interest to those working in the environmental sector with wetlands (including environmental education).

Please join us to learn more about the legislative tools available to protect wetlands

Guest Speakers:

  • Deborah Curran is the Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria where she teaches land and water regulation and law. As an author of numerous environmental law resources for government and articles to research journals, we are excited to host her!

    • Deborah will be speaking on one of the resources she developed for environmental stewards: Green Bylaws Toolkit for Conserving Sensitive Ecosystems and Green Infrastructure

  • Dave Newman is the Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Gibsons. He graduated from Camosun College as a Civil Engineering Technologist, and will bring over a decade of experience working with the Town of Gibson.

    • Dave will be speaking on the relationship of Natural Capital and Green Infrastructure

  • Brittany Lange is an Environmental Planner with the Regional District of Central Okanagan.  In her position she works to develop and implement policy and planning programs to improve environmental protection and sustainability within the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

    • Brittany will be speaking about Regional Floodplain Management Plan and sharing case studies on her experiences with environmental planning.

This workshop is suitable for consultants, planners, environmental/conservation groups, government representatives, First Nations, environmental educators, and engaged community members. Participants are invited to join the workshop with a wetland project or program that they wish to implement in their community and/or have a high propensity to initiate a project/program in the future.

This experience will also provide you access to a network of individuals who will help you successfully complete your local conservation project(s). You will leave with the skills, support, and confidence you need to make a difference in the world of wetland conservation. The BC Wildlife Federation offers follow-up support and resources to participants who complete the workshop, for up to 3 years post-workshop. Full-time participants are eligible to receive a certificate after successfully completing the workshop.

It is with great pleasure and excitement that we bring these valuable knowledge transfer events free of charge to wetland practitioners all over BC (and into other provinces!). This special offer is available thanks to the generous contributions of our funders.

Registration is limited and set on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration is separate for each individual event so please make sure to sign up for each event of interest.

This workshop is best experienced on a desktop or laptop computer, and a strong, stable internet connection is highly recommended.
