Virtual Juvenile Sturgeon Conservation Workshop

Date: February 11, 2021
Start time: 5:30pm-8:00pm
Location: Online via Zoom
Spots: 30 Total

Overview:

During this 2.5 hr virtual workshop participants will have the opportunity to gain further experience on juvenile sturgeon and their habitat as well as threats they encounter in the Fraser River. These workshops will include engaging activities and a presentation from various experts in the field.

On February 11th, Dr. Marvin Rosenau, instructor in the Fish Wildlife and Recreation Program (FWR) at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), will join us. Dr. Marvin Rosenau has over 35-year experience working in freshwater fisheries in the province of British Columbia. Much of his work has focused on stream and lake habitat-protection and restoration, including issues relating to gravel-removal from streams, lake fertilization and flow-augmentation for fluvial fishes. Dr. Rosenau worked extensively on lower Fraser River White Sturgeon during the 1990s as a BC fisheries program biologist and as a member of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society Science Committee. Species that Dr. Rosenau has worked on over the years include White Sturgeon, kokanee, Salish suckers, coho and Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and Nooksack dace.

Dr. Rosenau has worked as a review scientist on a number of large projects including the Petronas LNG Flores Bank terminal, Trans Mountain Pipeline’s expansion project, Alouette Reservoir sockeye salmon restoration, and Vedder River gravel removal arguing for the protection and restoration of these important salmonid watercourses.  Recently, in February 2020, Marvin testified as an expert witness in Federal Supreme court on the issues of flows and White Sturgeon habitat in the Nechako River.  Currently Dr. Rosenau is an instructor in the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program at BCIT and teaches fisheries, environmental monitoring, and supervises student research projects.
