Virtual Juvenile Sturgeon Conservation Workshop

Overview: During this 2.5 hr virtual workshop participants will have the opportunity to gain further experience on juvenile sturgeon and their habitat as well as threats they encounter in the Fraser River. These workshops will include engaging activities and a presentation from various experts in the field. On February 25th, Provincial Rivers Management Biologist Greg Andrusak will join us. Greg Andrusak is an experienced fish biologist working as the Provincial Rivers Management Biologist for the Ministry of Forest, Lands & Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development (MFLNRORD). Currently, Mr. Andrusak is a member Technical Working Group for the Nechako White Sturgeon Recovery Initiative which is responsible for examining why the white sturgeon is in decline and developing an effective plan to help restore white sturgeon to a self-sustaining population. Mr. Andrusak’s current projects related to white sturgeon include developing a multi-year white sturgeon monitoring program in the Mid Fraser River to assess the distribution of Nechako white sturgeon and developing a management working group for white sturgeon in BC. Mr. Andrusak’s expertise includes inland freshwater fisheries management, population (adult and juvenile) surveys, study design, acoustic telemetry, hydroacoustic survey analysis and reporting, stock assessment, habitat use and restoration of salmonids, with a primary focus is on large rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
