Webinar I: Canadian Copyright Basics for Permissions

Understanding permissions clearance and photo research requires first an understanding of copyright as it relates to permissions clearance. This seminar examines the most important aspects of copyright from this perspective: criteria for copyright protection, types of works protected by copyright, examples of rights protected, and rules surrounding public domain and fair dealing.

As a result of attending this session

  • attendees will be able to give examples of the breadth of materials protected by copyright and the types of rights that copyright covers.
  • attendees will be able to explain the criteria surrounding designations of public domain and fair dealing.

Webinar II: Permissions I: Log Creation, Request Sending, and Photo Research

In this webinar, participants will apply the knowledge gained in Canadian Copyright Basics for Permissions by examining the permissions process, beginning with manuscript assessment and the creation of a log of copyrighted material. The seminar then focuses on how to send a proper permission request to a rightsholder, and finishes by discussing the unique aspects of researching and clearing images. Although the seminar is taught through the lens of educational publishing, participants will find the information presented applicable to other fields.

As a result of attending this session

  • attendees will be able to locate copyrighted material in a manuscript and create a log of that material.
  • attendees will be able to identity the unique features and pitfalls of photo research.

Webinar III: Permissions II: Correspondence, Troubleshooting, and Project Wrap-Up

In the final seminar of the series, participants will follow the permissions process through to the end. Topics discussed comprise corresponding with rightsholders and clients, troubleshooting complex permissions situations, and wrapping up permissions projects. Although the seminar is taught through the lens of educational publishing, participants will find the information presented applicable to other fields.

As a result of attending this session

  • attendees will be able to list best-practice strategies for communicating with rightsholders and clients.
  • attendees will be able to better untangle tricky permissions situations through applying all of the knowledge gained in the seminar series.

This webinar is geared towards editorial and communications professionals who have basic experience in the topic area.
