2010-06-02: Charging HST for BC & ON shipping addresses or events

The provincial governments in British Columbia and Ontario are implementing the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on July 1, 2010. The HST (12% BC) and (13% ON) is a combination of Provincial Sales Tax (PST) and the Federal Goods and Services Taxes (GST). In both provinces the PST should no longer be applied after the HST is introduced. The GST will be applied and collected as part of the HST.

What do I need to do in order to charge HST as of July 1st for all products sold through my Shopping Cart?

If you sell taxable products which ship to destinations across Canada (including the HST charging provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland, & Nova Scotia), you will already have setup your products to charge GST, PST, & HST.

There is nothing further you need to do, assuming you have checked the box for HST for each taxable item in your Shopping Cart. As of July 1st, HST will be automatically charged for items to be shipped to Ontario or BC, instead of GST and/or PST.

My event is occurring after July 1st, and I need to collect HST now. How do I set this up?

During the transition period prior to July 1, 2010, checking the HST box in your event setup relates to the old rules for events prior to July 1, 2010 so that the HST will only be charged for events located in an HST charging province (New Brunswick, Newfoundland, & Nova Scotia).  Only when registering on or after July 1, will the HST tax apply to events located in BC or Ontario as well.

Since the HST settings will only work for events within BC or Ontario as of July 1st, you should use the "Other 1 Tax" in order to charge the 12% or 13% to all participants in the meantime. In your event setup, you must disable the GST setting, and enter an "Other 1 Tax" of 12% or 13% instead.

As of July 1st, you can leave the settings to charge the "Other Tax 1" or change the settings
