I will be participating in a medical relief and education mission with members of Team Broken Earth Ottawa in November 2025. This is the same organization that I did missions with in Haiti previously.  This time we are going to San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic. It will be our second time to this location.  

The group will focus on adult orthopaedic and paediatric plastic surgery. The leader of this team joined a primary care team in June 2025 and was able to sort out logistics to ensure the challenges faced on our previous trip are now resolved. 

I particularly look forward to our involvement with local medical students who assist in translation. This therefore provides educational value for these students.

The purpose of these missions is to provide free care to local patients who cannot access necessary interventions. We must bring our own  equipment which means obtaining orthopaedic implants, sutures, dressings, medications and other OR and anaesthesia supplies. Many of us will pay our own travel and as such much of the fundraising is directed toward these costly items.
