Guatemala take 2!
I will be returning to Guatemala Novemeber 25th, 2023 for my second medical mission trip with Team Barrie and I am VERY excited! I have to be honest… before my trip last year, I was nervous and wondered if I would be able to meet the challenges of serving people in another country. The 2022 trip was more than I could have anticipated though. As a team, we performed 50 surgeries, I got to meet some amazing people, and I learned that Broken Earth - Team Barrie is a force to be reckoned with! Our team faced each long day with determination to provide the best care possible for our patients. And even though some of us were literally sweating through each surgery, it felt like the easiest work.
There are a few changes to our trip this year. Our team will be working out of a different hospital. We will be in Antigua, Guatemala, at a larger hospital that has more resources. We still have to take all our disposables, but this hospital has a bigger sterile processing department, which will help with our efficiency. Even though we will be working in a different location, we will be caring for the same people groups. These people will primary be from remote communities in Guatemala where medical access is extremely limited. We are also going with a bigger team and will be able to run 4 operating rooms (1 gyne, 2 gen surg, and 1 ortho) instead of the 3 we had last year, as well as run a dental clinic.
I am so grateful for the financial donations that enabled me to be part of the medical mission in 2022. Without this type of support, Broken Earth would not be able to do the work it does. We are all volunteers during these trips and use vacation time or unpayed leave in order to be away from our regular jobs. Financial donations help pay for the team's transportation to and from Guatemala, our accommodations, and medical supplies like sponges, sutures, medication, and blood for transfusions.
